Are you interested in new ideas to grow and develop yourself and your business?
Join us for the next Chamber Business Book Club on 4 December - it’s for people who love to learn, want to get new perspectives on business and personal development – and would also like to meet other like-minded individuals.
The book we’re reading for the December Book Club is Great by Choice: Uncertainty, Chaos, and Luck—Why Some Thrive Despite Them All by Jim Collins.
This book asks the central question ‘“Why do some companies thrive in uncertainty, even chaos, and others do not?”
Given the shocks and uncertainty in the world in recent times, the book is an apt read for any business owner who wants to understand what makes a company great, and how they do it, even in tumultuous periods. If you’re curious about how others have done it, this book is jam packed with lessons learned that can be applied in any business.
The book’s authors, Collins and Hansen set out to identify companies that started from a position of vulnerability, rose to become great companies with spectacular performance, and did so in unstable environments characterised by big forces, out of their control.
The book explores some big concepts including; the value of consistent execution, regardless of good or bad times; the importance of small steps in innovating; how to manage risk and ‘lead above the death line’ and perhaps one of the most original, the role of luck in business success (spoiler alert: it’s not the luck itself, but what you do with it.)
So grab yourself a drink, get comfortable and join us online for an hour and a half of thought-provoking book and business chat.
About the event
Amy Lishman, Head of Member Engagement, facilitates the discussion and shares prompts and questions about the themes and topics for you to reflect upon. Hosted on Zoom, the Chamber Book Club happens every three months.
We’ll send you a synopsis of the book a couple of weeks in advance, to get you thinking about what you might contribute on the night.
You do not need to have come to the previous Book Clubs to attend.
Being part of the Business Book Club will get you delving into that pile of books – and introduce you to new titles that are not yet on your reading list.
You can buy the book from any good retailer. City Books has an excellent selection of business books. You can buy over the phone from them or online through https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/city-books Bookshop.org is an online bookshop that supports independent bookshops.
