Why on earth would I want to spend a day talking about Adventures?
Brighton Summitcompère, Steve Bustin explains why you should take a day out and come on an adventure.
A day is a long time in business. In the course of a day you can find a new customer, start or finish a major project or lose a client. You can get through your to-do list, clear your email inbox and make those calls you’ve been putting off for weeks.
Many of us can put a monetary value on our time – after all, it’s what a lot of us sell (plus our expertise, of course). We may even charge by the day. So why would you decide to give up a valuable commodity like a day of your time to attend a full day event? Especially one with a theme as nebulous as ‘adventure’? Surely your time is worth more than that?
It’s very hard to put a monetary value on a day like the annual Brighton Summit. There’s networking, sure, and you never know who you might sit next to or meet during a group activity, but that’s to take a purely practical view.
How do you measure inspiration? Being challenged? Thinking time? Enjoyment? Do you need to measure them – or just expose yourself to the possibility of encountering any of these nebulous but vital benefits?
The Summit is about more than just your business or your business skills, and this year’s topic of Adventure is designed to take you out of your proverbial comfort zone and push you forward personally as well as professionally.
A spirit of adventure is a necessity in business – you have to be prepared to take risks and make decisions based as much on intuition and experience as on hard facts and evidence.
If your business ISN’T currently an adventure for you, you need to come to the Summit to rediscover your mojo. If you’re in the middle of the adventure, come and get ideas on new ways of tackling the challenges and benefiting from what you’ve learned on your journey. If you’ve already been on an adventure, come and share your wisdom and your war wounds, to help other businesses grow and to benefit the city and each other.
Will it be scary? I hope so. Will it be inspirational? Absolutely. Will it be useful to your business? If it’s not, we’ve failed as organisers. Will it fun? Oh yes.
Will it be a valuable way to spend a day? There’s only one way to find out. We’re all going on an adventure. Are you coming?
