Terminal 5 – success or failure?

A talk by Tim Brady, Principal Research Fellow, Centre for Research in Innovation Management (CENTRIM), Brighton Business School, University of Brighton.

In a world where most infrastructure mega-projects fail, the construction of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 bucked the trend. The project was on schedule and within budget, and at its official opening by the Queen it was hailed as a great success.

Two weeks later when T5 went operational what should have been an occasion for celebration turned into a national disaster. A combination of problems led to complete chaos with almost 300 flights being cancelled and more than 20,000 pieces of luggage being stranded.

By comparing the rhetoric with the reality this talk reconsiders the project management of T5. Tim Bradywill tackle questions such as:

• What went wrong on that fateful first day?
• What lessons have been learnt?
• What factors influence the success or failure of large complex projects?
• What are the implications for future projects?

About the speaker

Dr Tim Brady is a Principal Research Fellow at CENTRIM (the Centre for Research on Innovation Management), University of Brighton. He was formerly Deputy Director of the Complex Product Systems (CoPS) Innovation Centre and a member of the Rethinking Project Management Network.

His current research interests include the role of programmes and projects in the implementation of corporate strategy and delivering organisational change, and learning and capability building in project-based firms.

He has published in journals such as Sloan Management Review, Organization Studies, Industrial and Corporate Change, Research Policy, R&D Management, the International Journal of Innovation Management, and the International Journal of Project Management.
