TEDx Whitechapel – “Visions for Transition”
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”Margaret Mead
TEDx is the brainchild of the much-exalted TED program and follows the same ethos: “ideas worth spreading”. This independently organised branch of TED is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to create their own TED experience, often centred on a concept that is of particular pertinence to them.
A team of students based at Schumacher College, Sussex University and Columbia University has been working together to facilitate their own TEDx event, which will take place in Whitechapel on 12th January 2013. Amrita Bhohi, Stefana Bosse and Jennifer Tessler were inspired by extensive travel and community work around the world, providing them with a shared vision of a more responsible, sustainable and beautiful future. TEDx Whitechapel has given the team the opportunity to align their own ‘visions for transition’ with those of their 10 speakers.
TEDx Whitechapel is a daylong conference that will provide a platform for passionate professionals from different fields of study, including education, earth law, science and holistic health and wellbeing. As with all TED events, there is a much broader trajectory; the team is using multimedia tools to spread the messages of the speakers, targeting people who may have no previous knowledge of TED talks. This will continue after the event, as the talks will be recorded and uploaded to watch for free on the website.
It is somewhat unusual for people so young to take such a pro-active role in future of the world, and the TEDx Whitechapel team have successfully organised, managed and promoted the event with the help of a small team of socially responsible young people from around the globe. As the team has said: “This is the spirit that TEDx Whitechapel embodies. We want to show that wholehearted dedication and collaboration are powerful tools for transformation."
