Stress Vs sustainable wellbeing
More than ever a wellbeing strategy is a “must have “, if you want your staff to compete by being resilient and gain an edge from your competitors then you need to look after them. In this article I will give you an insight of what is achievable and efficient to put into practice in the workplace.
Stress is a real issue in the workplace and a growing problem. Employers recognise the benefits of a stable and well trained workforce; the immediate benefits include an engaged workforce as well as reduced recruitment, training and sick pay costs. Poor health is one factor that can undermine a sustainable workforce.
Firstly it is very important to understand the culture of the company, the market, the environment, the clients, the demands of the jobs and at the very top knowing your people. They are the ones that day in and day out deal with those factors.
The approach used will determine the results, involve your people, and ask them about their challenges, about what they need and how you can support them as an employer.
Define your strategy to achieve sustainability, it's not just doing “something” that counts. You will achieve sustainable wellbeing if you use a holistic approach considering the mind, body and spirit of the employee. Psychological health, Physical health, emotional wellbeing, financial wellbeing consider all of them then bring the organisation into the equation. Important things such as Leadership, culture, values, internal procedures, communication channels and other factors in your organisation should be looked at.
Sustainable wellbeing will not only make your organisation a stronger business to compete in the market, but also will prevent health and wellbeing absenteeism through a cared approach where employee comes first. If you get the balance right the results can be magnificent for your business, reducing illnesses, stress levels, increased motivation, a sense of belonging and loyalty.
The corporate world is evolving all the time, do not spend time and money doing training and development that no one wants, focus on people’s wellbeing now. This is the right time to show that you care, we are human beings and we will really appreciate the care shown to us.
To conclude the message I would like to suggest a few non costly things: use your people to train your people. I am sure that there is a health and fitness fan in your company, let him/her talk about his/her passion. With this you will save money in training and at the same time develop individual skills and collective skills.
Let people take charge for half-day or a few hours and get the senior staff to experience the other end of the sword, this is highly effective. It will generate a very healthy approach to communication, feelings of gratitude for opportunities created in both ends , staff and management. Money has not come to the table yet, sometimes cost can be an excuse not to do what you need. In business you need common sense and good people, therefore that’s where your investment should lie today.
It’s all about the approach, it’s all about people.
Healthy regards
