Secretary of State backs local construction job initiative
‘Want to Work in Construction’, a groundbreaking new scheme which could eventually create up to 20 new jobs in Brighton & Hove’s construction industry has received backing from the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. The Rt. Hon. Eric Pickles MP said:
"The construction industry is vital to the UK economy and ‘Want to Work in Construction Week' is a great way for Brighton & Hove's 16-24 year olds to get the sort of job advice, work experience or apprenticeship opportunities that could help kick start a career or inspire a budding entrepreneur to success. They've shown all it needs is a little community spirit and some commitment from industry to show young people that if they aspire to work hard at a job they enjoy they'll get on in life."
The initiative is a free, week-long programme of seminars and workshops to be held at the American Express Community Stadium in April is aimed at job seekers and students looking for a career in the industry. The project is a partnership between Albion in the Community, City College, the Hemsley Orrell Partnership (HOP), Centurion Group and the Bouygues Group with support from a number of local construction companies.
The programme will see leading experts from the companies deliver a series of masterclasses on all aspects of construction covering project management of large development projects (including the Amex Stadium), the role of architects and civil engineers and sessions on sustainable design and ecology. The week will also include site visits to some of the city’s key development projects.
Attendees who impress employers the most during the week will be offered the employment opportunities which will be in the form of jobs, apprenticeships and work placements.
Ed Allison-Wright - Director, Centurion Group said: "It’s very encouraging to receive this level of recognition from central government for the Want to Work in Construction initiative. Such a statement provides a significant boost for the project team, as we try to engage the rest of the Brighton & Hove community with such a fantastic opportunity for the young and aspiring generations in our City."
Sixty places are available for the week-long programme which will run from April 8th – 12th. An open day where people can find out more about the programme and register for it is taking place at City College on Tuesday February 12th. A second open day is planned at the Amex Stadium in March.
