Passionate about clients, people and communities
Rix & Kay Solicitors is a long-established and award winning law firm that has a reputation for providing outstanding client service.
With offices in Brighton and Hove and throughout Sussex and Kent, we talk to Bruce Hayter, Rix & Kay’s Managing Partner.
What does Rix & Kay mean to the City of Brighton & Hove?
As a firm, Rix & Kay have grown up in Sussex and our roots in the County go back to 1948 when the firm was first established in Uckfield, so we have always had a strong affinity with the region. Over that time the firm has grown and our great reputation in Sussex has allowed us to develop a strong client base in Brighton and Hove.
Our commitment to serving the City was really underlined when we completed the merger with Bunkers Solicitors in 2011. Bunkers had been a main-stay in the Brighton & Hove community for more than 100 years, supporting individuals and their families in such areas as wills, probate, family law, property and dispute resolution.
Since the merger, Rix & Kay have really embraced Bunkers heritage and, coupled with our existing corporate and commercial offering, we can now proudly say that we are an important contributor to the success of businesses and individuals in the City.
How do you engage with local people?
One of our core values is to support the communities in which we work. Brighton & Hove is where we do business and it’s where many of our clients and our people come from. So as you can imagine, it’s something that we are very passionate about.
We take seriously our responsibility to engage with and support a range of charities, trusts and initiatives that directly help those in the City.
We are proud to be supporting the Starr Trust who are an independent, family run charity based in Hove who work with young people to fulfil their potential through sports, arts and education. A number of our Partners will be cycling from Brighton in Cornwall to Brighton in Sussex this June.
We are also a trusted partner of Active Sussex and have been long-time supporters of Brighton & Hove Arts Council.
You mentioned your core values, so what else matters to Rix & Kay?
Like all law firms, our clients are central to our success and are highly valued. But we recognise that they are far more than just that. We actively invest in our clients by engaging with them to understand their needs and how we can work better together.
Our other passion is our own people. We know that they define our business so they need to be more than just great lawyers. We encourage our people to contribute to the firm’s success by embracing their ideas, celebrating different ways of working and by not being afraid to do things differently. We like to shake things up.
The result is that our people aren’t typical lawyers and they don’t wear “Lawyer” as a badge. They are open, approachable, always accessible and easy to talk to, as well as being commercially minded and technically brilliant.
What does the future look like?
We are ambitious and want to continue to grow. Not just in Brighton but across Sussex and Kent. We have just opened a new office in Ashford, Kent and see this as a great opportunity to build on our successful operations there.
We will also continue to find new ways to engage with the people we work with through focused thought-leadership campaigns. We think this is a great way to showcase our expertise and I was delighted that we recently won the Law Society Excellence Award that recognises exceptional people, teams and organisations in the legal profession.
The award was presented to our Later Life Team based in Brighton & Hove, for the work they do in supporting those in or planning for later life and is a fantastic achievement for Rix & Kay.
