MPs welcome recruitment fair to Hove
Three MPs, the president of Brighton Chamber of Commerce and Jobcentre Plus have welcomed plans for a recruitment fair to be held in Hove next month.
The event is being organised by Worthing mother-of-four Karyn Slyfield, who aims to bring under one roof people offering job opportunities or advice and those seeking flexible work or hoping to start their own businesses.
The Working Jobs from Home Recruitment Fair is to be held at the Lansdowne Place Hotel and Spa, Lansdowne Place, Hove, on September 29th, from 10.30am until 4pm.
MP for Hove and Portslade, Mike Weatherley, said he was delighted that a fair designed to help people looking for flexible ways of working was to be held in his constituency.
“In these difficult times people need help with spotting opportunities for different ways of working and it is great that they will have chance to find, here in Hove, ideas for jobs that can be tailored to suit their own lives,” he said.
“Congratulations to Karyn for organising the fair. And well done to her for finding her own way of flexible working which has resulted in the building of a business that helps other people find the right work life balance.”
President of Brighton Chamber of Commerce, and a business mentor herself, Julia Chanteray, said the fair could be particularly useful for people thinking of becoming self-employed who need a little bit of cash safety while planning for the future.
She said: “One of the things I encourage businesses to do is to aim for multiple income streams then money coming in from one area can pay some of the bills while a bigger business is started.”
Julia added joining the Chamber of Commerce would also be invaluable for anybody starting a business. “Going self-employed for the first time is a whole new experience, nobody prepares you for it and it can be a shock to the senses – it certainly was for me.
“If you join the Chamber you will be with people who have already made that journey and can support you through the first stages.”
Peter Bottomley, MP for Worthing West, said he was pleased to hear about the recruitment fair.
He added: “I have recently welcomed back to my office Sally Myers who has been on maternity leave. I have tried to be accommodating to her needs as a new mother when juggling the work/life balance.
“My wife was a working mother so in my personal and professional life I well understand the challenges that face working families.
“I congratulate Karyn Slyfield on the initiative. I hope that the recruitment fair will help those wishing to work from home, looking for flexible work or anyone trying to set up their own business.”
Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton, Kemp Town and Peacehaven said: “Flexible working is vital for many people in Brighton and Hove, including parents, carers and students, allowing them to fit their jobs around their other important responsibilities.
“I also believe that employers in the area are increasingly coming to appreciate the benefits of flexible working to their businesses, as flexibility alleviates many of the pressures felt by a workforce and technological advances are constantly expanding the scope of opportunities available in this area.
“A flexible working fair is an excellent idea and offers a fantastic opportunity for employers and employees to get together to explore these benefits.”
Jobcentre Plus will have staff on hand to advise people about starting a business and being self-employed and on how their benefits may be affected by working from home.
Julie Devlin, of Hove Jobcentre Plus, said: “We know that many jobseekers in Hove would like the opportunity to start their own business and now they can get all the support they need through the New Enterprise Allowance.
“Jobseekers can get expert advice, their own business mentor, a loan up to £1,000, and financial support during the first six months of trading.
“Any jobseeker who wants to know more and find out if they are eligible should contact their local Jobcentre or speak to Jobcentre Plus advisers at the Working Jobs from Home Recruitment Fair.”
