Sussex Community Foundation recently celebrated giving out a total of £1million in grants with the handover of a £5,000 donation to Clock Tower Sanctuary in Brighton, on behalf of American Express.
Set up just 3 years ago, by the Duke of Richmond, Sussex Community Foundation awards grants to local charities and community groups. By encouraging local philanthropy, money is raised from local donors and invested to provide a growing permanent fund for charities and community groups in Sussex.
The Foundation has funded 374 organisations across Sussex including 125 groups in Brighton & Hove which have received £364,000. Most are very small groups, making a big difference with a small amount of money.
The Duke of Richmond said: “I set up the Community Foundation because I wanted to encourage local people and companies to support their own community, and to address the significant social problems that exist in Sussex. For the Foundation to have awarded £1million in just three years is beyond my greatest expectations.”
The Clock Tower Sanctuary received its cheque for £5,000 from the American Express Fund at the Foundation, to help maintain the service they provide for homeless young people over the next year. The city has a high proportion of young people who are homeless. One in eight homeless people in the city are aged between 16-17 year olds, significantly higher than the national or regional average.
Clock Tower Sanctuary’s Susie Hudson said ‘We are delighted to receive this grant from the Foundation as it will help us continue to provide our services at a time of growing need and difficulty for homeless young people.’
A wide range of people and companies have supported the Foundation, including American Express; Professor and Mrs Hans Rausing; William Reed Business Media; The Cullum Family Trust; Veolia, Mr Colin Field & Family and BAA Communities Trust.
The Foundation now has an exciting opportunity to raise even more through the Government’s Grassroots Grants programme in Sussex. This will match local donations pound for pound, dramatically increasing the charitable funds available for the future.
Groups interested in applying can contact Sussex Community Foundation on 01273 409440 or email at info@sussexgiving.org.uk.
People interested in donating to the Foundation can contact Kevin Richmond or Janet Ormerod at the same address.
