Local construction job initiative launched

A new groundbreaking scheme which could eventually create up to 20 new jobs in the local construction industry has been launched at City College Brighton and Hove by senior industry figures and Albion in the Community.
 
The ‘Want to Work in Construction’ initiative, a free, week-long programme of seminars and workshops to be held at the American Express Community Stadium in April is aimed at job seekers and students looking for a career in the industry. The project is a partnership between Albion in the Community, City College, the Hemsley Orrell Partnership (HOP), Centurion Group and the Bouygues Group with support from a number of local construction companies.
 
The programme will see leading experts from the companies deliver a series of masterclasses on all aspects of construction covering project management of large development projects (including the Amex Stadium), the role of architects and civil engineers and sessions on sustainable design and ecology. The week will also include site visits to some of the city’s key development projects.
 
Attendees who impress employers the most during the week will be offered the employment opportunities which will be in the form of jobs, apprenticeships and work placements.
 
Jon Orrell, Director of the Hemsely Orrell Partnership in Hove said:

Thanks to the support and commitment of the partners, this project will deliver real jobs and work opportunities locally.”

“It’s great to see employers taking the lead and creating opportunities for people who are looking to work in construction.  Particular praise should go to Jon Orrell from HOP and Ed Allison-Wright from Centurion for coming up with the concept and working in partnership to take it forward. It’s also very encouraging that we’re now getting considerable input and support  for the project from a number of employers who are all committed to making a difference by supporting skills training and creating jobs in the City.”

“This is a fantastic way for Want to Work to kick-off the year and where better for people to come and learn about construction than at the Amex Stadium which stands as a magnificent testament to the skills of the construction industry.”
 
Sixty places are available for the week-long programme which will run from April 8th – 12th. An open day where people can find out more about the programme and register for it is taking place at City College on Tuesday February 12th. A second open day is planned at the Amex Stadium in March.
