Interview with the Hartley Fowler LLP
Chartered Accountants Hartley Fowler are sponsoring our July, August and September Chamber breakfasts. We caught up with the team to find out more about the company, ahead of this month's breakfast.
1.Tell me a bit about the business, how did it start?
Hartley Fowler was set up by Chris Hartley and Maurice Fowler in the late 1960’s in Croydon. The firm expanded into Horley, Horsham and Brighton during the 1970’s - Maurice Fowler was very entrepreneurial and the firm has even had some international offices over the years!
2. How has the business grown over the years?
Hartley Fowler has grown organically, as well as through a number of merger and acquisitions and now operates out of three offices: Brighton, Horsham and Wimbledon; covering the A23/A24 corridor, as well as into London. We are really excited to be launching our new cloud based service this year which is in response to clients’ needs. ‘HFCloud’ will be launched this summer and we expect this will help to continue the firm to grow and attract new clients.
3. What differentiates Hartley Fowler from other accountancy firms?
We take the time to get to know our clients’ needs by understanding their businesses, as well as their personal, goals and we can then provide proactive advice, rather than just a reactive accounting service.
4. What’s the best thing about doing business in Brighton?
Brighton is such a vibrant City, we love the diversity of businesses that we have the opportunity to work with. Having been involved in Young Start-up Talent for a number of years too, we have seen lots of entrepreneurs flourish and grow. We think that Brighton is a perfect environment for the start-up business.
5. What are your top 3 tips for businesses when looking for an accountant?
1.Choose someone who you like working with and trust, you need to feel happy to send the email or pick up the phone about that little question.
2.Talk through what services you need with prospective firms to make sure they are a good ‘fit’
3.Get at least three quotes but make sure you are comparing like with like.
6. What are you looking forward to hearing about at the event?
The Breakfasts are always so well attended and we love hearing about other people’s businesses and how things are for them. We are also looking forward to hearing from Seb and the working space platform that he has launched, it could well be of interest to some of our clients!
