Interested in Business and Community opportunities in Southwick?
‘Sailing through history’
In 1926 the Sussex Yacht Club purchased the freehold of the Old Malthouse situated on the waterfront at Southwick. This property has had improvements but little structural change to either the exterior or interior to the present day. The property is the only Grade II Listed Building in the Southwick Conservation Zone and of significant historic value to the wider community and nation.
We now intend to develop the Southwick Clubhouse into a venue more fit for purpose for members, local businesses and the community. The listed building has many heritage features which must be preserved. By sympathetic re-building we endeavour to convert these historic premises into a modern training, events and conference centre, which will complement the proposed Southwick Waterfront development and local development plans. We also plan to open up the site for school visits, with a small museum and interactive learning stations and a guided tour of the site with historical learning. We have been working on this project, known as ‘Sailing Through History’ since 2015. We have been working with conservation planners, architects and advisers for over a year, and have recently secured start-up funding through the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Architectural Heritage Fund.
We’d like to hear ‘your views’ on the project and will be holding Consultation Events at the Southwick site:
Local Business Consultation, Thursday 6th October, 8.30am – 10.30am
Community Consultation, Thursday 20th October, 6pm – 8pm
We have also created a survey to gather views on development of Southwick Clubhouse: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/H25BBTV
