Doing what is important to you
Conversation session, Brighton Summit, Friday 16 October
Discussing how to make a business out of something that is important to you, you’ll hear from Gary Peters founder of Lovelocaljobs.com, Ruth Anslow from hiSbe and Lee Evans from Organic Roofs.
Gary Peters will discuss the statement, 'The only way to do great work is to love what you do' - Steve Jobs. "How true this is but hey, it's a lot easier said than done...or is it? We only get a short amount of time in this amazing world we live in so why don't we take more leaps into the unknown and try new things, something we love or maybe we're madly passionate about?"
"I did it and it's undoubtedly the best thing I ever did. It hasn't been easy but looking back I believe anybody can do it; it just takes a huge leap of faith, complete and utter dedication and a little of luck! I'd love to share my story with you. You never know, it may just give you the confidence to do it too!"
Founder of award winning LoveLocalJobs.com and ICPSearch.com, Gary is described an energetic entrepreneur who translates ideas into actions without any fuss. Gary utilises his energy and experience from within the recruitment industry to strengthen communities and economies at grassroots level – increasing employment opportunities, enhancing education participation and raising aspirations for local residents and businesses alike.
Gary has a genuine passion for what he does and has won several prestigious regional awards recently including the 'Greatest Contribution to the Community' and 'Entrepreneur of the Year' at last years Sussex Business Awards.
Ruth Anslow, Co-Founder of hiSbe Food CIC is in love with the idea that business can be a force for good, by serving the interests of the public and communities, not just a few shareholders and directors. She’s into destructive innovation that makes out-of-date business models obsolete and believes that following a vision of “how it should be,” can transform whole industries. Ruth dreams of reinventing big business, starting with supermarkets. And she's made that dream her priority.
Ruth and Amy Anslow are sisters from Brighton and they run hiSbe Food CIC with their partner, Jack Simmonds. hiSbe stands for “how it should be” and they’re reinventing the way supermarkets do business, because it’s time to stand up for fair, responsible and sustainable trading.
hiSbe is creating a national chain of independent community supermarkets. "We’re smashing the supermarket model by putting the happiness of customers, staff and suppliers at the heart of everything we do. So when you shop at hiSbe, you’re voting for a supermarket that’s fit for the 21st Century. And we’re using your money to transform the food industry with responsible, fair and sustainable sourcing and trading…Because that’s just how it should be."
Lee Evans will be talking about the possibilities running a small business gives you to embody your principles. Including treating staff how you would want to be treated yourself, influencing your supply chain (with varying degrees of success) and thinking about how to grow without increasing your impact.
Director of Organic Roofs, Lee has several years’ professional experience commercially applying current best-practice in the green roof and green infrastructure sector. With specific expertise in green roof design for biodiversity, Lee has a strong commitment to maximising the social as well as environmental impact of his business operations.
The discussion will be facilitated by Lorraine Bell, Business Support Manager at the Green Growth Platform. Lorraine's role is to support our eligible businesses members through specialist 1-2-1 support to help them realise their growth potential.
