Could you be a mentor?
Could you be a mentor?
The University of Brighton is recruiting volunteer mentors to help support students based at its Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings campuses.
Mentors will work with students who stand to benefit most and who need support to unlock their potential. The beneficiaries of the programme are students who have disabilities, students from a Black and Asian Minority Background, students who are care leavers, and men in receipt of a bursary. Mentors also support students who are in need of a general confidence boost.
Brighton “Mentor of the Year”, Katherine Whittaker, said of her experience: "By having someone to talk to in his planning and help him with his organisation, he gained the confidence to achieve his goals. It means a lot to be able to have made such a difference to someone who has always had so much potential and who will now be going on to do amazing things with his life”. Pravin has now been awarded a scholarship to study a Masters degree in Advanced Mechanical Engineering.
There are many benefits to becoming a mentor. In exchange for a small amount of time, mentors receive:
•training in coaching skills that they can use throughout their career
•insight into higher education today and the strengths and development needs of graduates
•opportunities to network with fellow professionals from a wide range of disciplines
•an understanding of how mentoring can assist staff development in your own organisation.
The 2016/17 Momentum programme starts in September 2016. Please contact us as soon as possible if you would like to be a mentor. For further information and to apply, visit:
