Being an intern at the Brighton Chamber
Darcie Doyle interned with the Brighton Chamber over the Summer. Here she shares her experience:
Over the past 10 weeks, trying to use my ridiculously long University summer holiday wisely, I have been interning at the Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce. I have learnt more over these 10 weeks then could have imagined and the most important piece of advice I could offer any student would be to ditch the monotonous holiday day job and get an internship.
I was welcomed into the Chamber with open arms and immediately felt at home. I started just a couple of weeks before ‘The Summit’ – an extremely popular, entertaining and informative one day business conference. This meant it was full steam ahead from the moment I arrived, which frankly, I greatly appreciated.
The theme of the Summit was adventure; a theme that definitely continued throughout my time at the Chamber. I have been lucky enough to attend a range of fantastic events, hear some truly inspirational speakers and meet a variety of interesting people.
I have gained invaluable experience from being at the Chamber which I know will be a huge advantage for future jobs. As well as the experience, the recognition gained by working at the Chamber with future employers is priceless; it in fact helped secure my most recent job with the University of Sussex Student Lettings, who are a member of the Chamber.
Not only have I learnt a huge amount and gained heaps of experience, I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute working with the Chamber. I hope to keep in contact with everyone here and also volunteer my time to help at their great events.
The Chamber has had two interns since January through the Sussex University Internship Programme. The internships have proved so useful that the Chamber has created a 12 month student placement/assistant role from September 2014.
