Session two of the Brighton Summit is designed to be about you. You’ll join a rich mix of professionals and businesses and together, in small groups, discover and learn. This motivational and productive session is led by Emma Haughton and Lisa Westbury of Generate, along with a team of fabulous Chamber member facilitators:Phil Richards,Dieter Hachenberg, Clare Evans, Hilary Ellis and Emma Ferrey
Here Emma sheds some light on what to expect.
Hopefully by now you know what the 4th July holds, besides a celebration of independence! The Brighton Summit, an invitation to adventure offers: “A chance to take stock, be inspired by other people’s stories and gain insights that will spur your business on…things you haven’t even considered as being relevant to your work will suddenly gain great significance by the end of the day….”
It’s a call to adventure. Why adventure? Isn’t ‘adventure’ something that happens to others, something we read about in books or see on film? Or something we might do in a moment of madness and probably at the weekend?!
Whether it’s an adventure, a quest, an escapade, journey, voyage or expedition, we understand that all of these imply GOING somewhere, heading towards something and invites an element of risk, surprise, mystery, excitement, newness and change.
What if each of us were to take a moment to think about our work, our business, our career in this way - it is, after all, a journey of sorts, often full of the unknown, surprise, risk and change. As the hero or heroine of your own personal quest, what is your ultimate goal? Where are you going, or would you most like to go? What would really stretch and challenge you and what’s in your way?
Whatever the challenge or goal you set yourself, encouragement, support and knowing we are not alone can make a huge difference. We meet others, fellow travellers, on their own journey every day, but do we make the most of these encounters?
At the Summit, you’ll have the opportunity to do just that. So what can you expect to get from this ‘pop-up peer group’? My experience as a coach, in particular working in groups, is that in a very short space of time considerable shifts can be made.
ATTENTION can focus our thinking, and help us get to a brilliant solution or resolution much quicker than on our own. Neuroscience provides clear evidence that ‘mindful attention’ literally helps integrate the right and left hemispheres of the brain, which not only opens up new solutions and creativity, but also builds lasting connections (neural pathways) that can be used for future problem-solving (Siegel 2010).
THINKING OUT LOUD can connect the dots: real joined up thinking! One of your peers may say something you’ve heard before, but when presented in a different context, the idea can suddenly makes sense.
SYNERGY - In a group of peers, someone may be strong in an area where you’re weak or had experiences you haven’t, which enables you to build on and add to your own knowledge.
ACCOUNTABILITY - Sharing a thought, idea or goal with others can check out our commitment to it. This naturally increases our chances for taking action
