5 ways to up your social media marketing!
Kerry Watkins from Social Brighton discusses the importance of social media marketing and gives us her 5 top tips for creating a social media strategy.
Developing an online presence is essential in today’s business world. The digital world is currently dominated by social media and with so much going on across
social media platforms it can be daunting.
Whilst social networks are accessible to all and it’s not difficult to boost a Facebook post, there’s a big difference between doing something that’s just ‘OK’ and doing something great that brings real business results. Without consideration of the content you are sharing online, how this reflects your business and clear goals of what you want to achieve from social media, you may find your efforts are wasted.
It’s a misconception that social media for business is free. Your time is valuable and if you’re going to spend a few hours per week on social media marketing, you should be confident that it is time well spent.
5 Steps to a Simple Strategy
1.Set clear goals: Putting a strategy together will ensure that you’ve covered all the bases and this has to start with at least 2 or 3 clear goals. You may want to increase website traffic from social networks by 10% or create 20 new business leads per month via a Facebook advert - whatever it is, keep these goals in mind throughout all your activity.
2.Talk to your customers/clients; imagine you are talking to them offline and your language will be more engaging online. Think about their interests and circumstances and understand where you can add value. Write as if you are speaking to one person rather than a roomful.
3.Rule of Thirds: Let this simple rule guide your time online to maximise engagement and network growth. ⅓ = Publish your own content (some planned ahead but also allow for real-time content too). ⅓ = Curate and share others content. ⅓ = Be social and interact with your networks.
4.Utilise the tools available: there are a lot of useful, free tools that can help with social media management. Try Buffer or Hootsuite for scheduling content, Tweetdeck for monitoring and Canva for creating beautiful graphics. There are many others but these are some highly recommended ones to save you time and improve your marketing for no expense.
5.Measure your performance: the objectives you set will determine which metrics you measure. If you’re aiming to increase website traffic, track social media referrals in Google Analytics. If you’re hoping to increase engagement with your audience, track content engagement metrics. There is a lot of data available but don’t get bogged down - just track what’s important so you know if your efforts are working.
These steps should really help get you on the right track. To learn more or really improve, come to one of our workshops for small businesses this March.
