5 reasons why entrepreneurs are always injured
Members Brighton Sports Therapy have written a blog discussing the 5 most common reasons why entrepreneurs always seem to be injured.
At our Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy clinic we often see tired, stressed out, emotional or just plain broken entrepreneurs! They come in with a whole host of ailments. From the severe to the mildly irritating. But don't beat yourself up! All of them can be improved by simply working on the following 5 aspects of entrepreneurial life.
1. Stress
The more stressed we are the more pain we feel. Fact. This blog is not the place for the molecular level explanation but we see evidence of this daily. Take steps to reduce your stress levels and you will reduce the amount of pain you feel. Do more of the things you enjoy. Less of the things you don't. Pay someone else to do them - you can't do everything!
2. Bad posture
Goes hand in hand with the stress. The more stress we are under the more pressure we feel and our posture gets worse and worse. If you put a muscle in a short position it stays short - adaptive shortening. This can give pain in the muscle itself or elsewhere as a compensation. Try not to be too slumpy or grumpy! If your body language is positive your mind will be more positive and you will be in less pain.
3. Too much computer work
Most entrepreneurial jobs require lots of computer work to organise your empire! There are a few common problems which can lead to back pain, shoulder tension and RSI type conditions. Some simple tips can help mitigate these problems. Avoid reaching for your mouse. Have your elbow at ninety degrees and use the mouse close to you. If you use a laptop plug in a normal mouse and do the same. Tracker pads and alike cause all kinds of problems.
4. Not enough movement
There's too much to do and not enough time so you sit there for 8 hours straight and still don't get it all done! Cut yourself some slack. Take time to move and take breaks. You'll be more efficient in your work and your muscles won't shorten and tighten as much and give you less grief.
5. Not enough time to exercise
Just build in whatever you can to your routine. Movement and exercise release endorphins which mean you feel less pain. With a busy schedule exercise however you can. Walk, run, bike to work. Get out in your lunch break. Take your trainers to work. Anything to get you moving and active will massively reduce your likelihood of injury and illness.
