100 celebrations during National Living Wage week
Over the last 18 months, Brighton Chamber and the Living Wage Brighton have been fighting tirelessly for the Living Wage to become the minimum level of payment for all employers and employees in our city. Our goal was to make Brighton and Hove a great example of how this level of pay can become the norm.
What is the Living Wage?
• An hourly rate set independently and updated annually.
• The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK, alleviating poverty.
• Employers choose to pay the Living Wage on a voluntary basis.
• The Living Wage enjoys cross party support, with public backing from the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
• Paying the Living Wage is good for business, good for the individual and good for society.
100 Businesses onboard
Being met with more enthusiasm than we could ever have hoped for, we are over the moon to announce that we have hit our 2 year target early with over 100 businesses signed up – this affects nearly 800 salaries in the city which is perfect timing as we are celebrating National Living Wage week.
This week we hope we can focus everyone’s attention and get all those businesses who are already paying the Living Wage – sometimes without even realising – to sign up. We want to demonstrate how many responsible businesses we have in this city. So if you pay all of your direct employees £7.65ph then join the campaign*.
